May 2008 celebrates our 12th year anniversary. It is appropriate for us to reflect on what we have done in the
past, what we have done recently, and how we can do more. After all, the church should be the reflection of
Christ in the community. One way to reflect Christ is through community service.
We collect food each month that is distributed to individuals and food banks. We have hosted three
county-wide World AIDS Day Services attended by several hundred persons. We have had about 40 socials,
open to the community that have included Pot Luck Dinners, Game Nights, Theatre nights, and picnics.
We have hosted Free Community Concerts featuring Marsha Stevens, The mother of Contemporary Christian
music, the Gay Men’s Chorus, the Flamingo Freedom Band, and the Lambda Chorale. We’ve had seven
annual tree trimming and caroling parties. We have gone out twice caroling at GLBT venues and Connor's
Nursery. Our congregation, for the past several years has provided Christmas gifts for the children in the
after school program at the Drug Abuse Foundation. We have participated in Pridefest, and our clergy have
participated in many panel discussions on GLBT issues.
Something we don’t talk about much is our charitable giving. We do it because, as a community of faith, we
believe it is something we should do. Since our inception in May of 1996, we have given over $24,000 to a
really diverse group of organizations. A partial list includes:
Now what have we done lately? We’ve become more proactive by including announcements for events from
other groups, local churches, individuals, concerts by local artists that support the community, and Get Out
The Vote PSAs in our newsletter and via bulletin inserts. We are happy to be able to list events from
community service organizations. We’ve also revamped our community resource info in our newsletter to
include many of these organizations.
